My first weeks in London – A blog post from our intern, Hava from Germany!

Hava, our intern, writes about her first impressions of London and what it’s been like to live and work in the Big Smoke!

When I first heard about the opportunity to do an internship in London I got way too excited and started picking all the cool places I needed to see in London one year beforehand and the excitement stayed until the day of my flight.

When I finally arrived at Victoria Station, I needed to overcome my shyness and ask people where to go and somehow get a monthly oyster card (which, by the way, is way too expensive!). But I never had to ask for help – people just came to me and helped me with my luggage, which was totally nice but unusual for me because the people in Berlin are mostly just very rude.

That’s Camden Lock

I have been in London for two weeks now and what I realized is that I never had to wait more than 3 minutes for the tube but I still need to get used to the pressure on my ears, the long and winding distances to the other underground lines and all the newspapers laying around in the tube.

And my impressions from 2009 didn’t change in any way – the people here are so nice and open, which was really helpful. When I started my first day of work at Tti School of English, I felt really comfortable from the very first day and I enjoy working there. The atmosphere is just great and the location at Camden High Street offers lots of shops to pop into. I also like the supermarkets here, especially Waitrose, because they offer a wide range of prepared food and cakes, so you don’t have to worry about cooking anymore if you are as lazy as me.

Street Art opposite the World’s End

Of course I’ve already seen lots of London’s famous landmarks but I prefer wandering around aimlessly and behold the great architecture and all the street artists. My favourite places so far are Covent Garden and Notting Hill.

My cat Miezi !

The only thing I miss right now from home is my cat! Other than her I could see myself living in London for a long time but I guess I could always bring her here!

Thank you Hava for your blog! We look forward to your next entry!  (:
