We asked our teacher, James , to outline the differences between the 3 main exam preparation courses we offer here at Tti – FCE, CAE & IELTS. Below James explains the differences and what skills you will walk away with after you complete the course! We’ve also included some useful links & resources from the official Cambridge site as well as more information on our courses here at Tti School !
The FCE is the exam if you want to fix all of your grammar holes. Like IELTS it includes the four skills papers (reading, listening, speaking and writing), but it also includes a use of english paper (grammar and vocab). You will begin to learn how to write a variety of writing styles (both formal and informal) and as the speaking exam is in pairs you will improve your skills of interacting in spoken English. You will improve a variety of skills and leave yourself with a level of English sufficient to comfortably work in an office environment in an English speaking country. According to Cambridge, this qualification “proves you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country or study on courses taught in English”

The CAE exam is similar to the FCE, though the focus is much more on technical aspects of the English language. With the FCE you will have mastered the main elements of English grammar. The CAE will give you the language and skills necessary to take your English up to native speaker level. It will focus on all of the more advanced linguistic features that will enable you to be a very high level communicator in English. By the end of the course you will be able to comfortably study any subject at any English speaking university or operate at a managerial level in your profession. According to Cambridge , you will walk away with “the language skills that employers and universities are looking for”.
