LUNCH CLUB & WORLD BOOK DAY
Every month Lucy, our Director of Studies, organises a lunch with long term students or rather students that are staying here for more than 15 weeks.
Why? 2 reasons..
1) to let long term students meet other long term students and gives them the possibility to make new friends!
2) Lucy really likes to spend time with students and she enjoys having lunch with them 
Once a month our long-term students and Lucy are sharing food from England and also other Countries (students are free to bring food from their own Country) and speak about one topic.
Lunch club students of this week were:
1) Caroline: is from Sweden, she is staying in London with her Boyfriend and they have discussed how long they are going to stay in London but they are not sure, but at least 6 months and probably there are going to study here at the University. She will be studying at Tti until June.
2) Madoka is form Japan, she arrived here in September and she will go back in July. She is here as Aupair. She likes going out, dancing and drinking with friends.
3) Aurelie: is French and her city is Montpellier. She will study in Tti until the end of July
4) Masami: is from Japan, she arrived in London in October 2015 and she will stay until September 2016. At the moment she is studying General English in the Intermediate class. She likes visiting parks, watching movies and listening rock music. She doesn’t like gin & tonic because she prefers just to drink Gin neat.
5) Dora is from Japan, she has been studying in Tti for 10 months and there are her 2 last weeks here but she will come back to London in April.
The topics of this Lunch club were: food and books to celebrate World Book Day.
Lucy brought some delicious savoury foods from England:
Pork pie : made with sausage meat and pastry; Scotch egg: made with boiled egg, sausage meat and brad crumbs; and Pasty: made with cheese and onion.
They all like English food except for Caroline who completely dislikes pickled eggs, she really love Smorgastarta (Sandwich cake) and she will probably bring it to the next Lunch Club: is a savoury Swedish cake made with different slides of breads and different fillings. We are all looking for that day, it looks delicious!!!!
Madoka, Masami and Aurelie today have discussed about World Book Day in class and they have discovered a lot of new information:
World Book Day is an event organised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
Every country is celebrating this day in the anniversary of the death of Shakespeare in the 23rd of April except for United kingdom, where the day is recognized on the first Thursday in March.

Caroline is reading A child called It by dave Pelter:
it is a non fiction book where the Author describes from his viewpoint about the severe abuse he suffered as a child. He writes how his mother was physically and emotionally abusive towards him from ages 4 to 12. In his book he describes how his mom starved him, forced him to drink ammonia, stabbed him in the stomach, burned his arm on a gas stove, and forced him to eat his own vomit. He mentioned that his father was not active in resolving or stopping the conflicts between Pelzer and his alcoholic mother. In 1973 at age 12 he was sent to a foster family. In the book he uses pseudonyms to reference his relatives.
She thinks that is a really strong book and it has some raw and unfiltered description!

Madoka is reading Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah:
Again is a non fiction book, it speaks about Alem who is a refugee from Ethiopia who escapes to England. Alem’s father takes him to London, England, under the pretext of a holiday to celebrate his fourteenth birthday but leaves him to be alone with a letter for Alem and one to the hotel manager, Mr. Hardwick. Mr. Hardwick allows Alem to stay for a few days and on the final day he brings him in the Refugee Council who send Alem to a children’s home. His time at the home is violent and disturbing as a rude boy sweeny decides to beat him up and he tries to run away but ends up back at the home. He is then moved to london and placed in a foster family (the Fitzgerald’s). Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald are a professional foster family. Ruth, their teenage daughter, seems unhappy with Alem. Alem returns from his first day at school, where he has made two friends, Robert and Buck, to discover a letter from his father indicating his mother has gone missing…..
Madoka recommend this book which is unputdownable!
The last book for Dora was a Kid book about a fish’s story! Even if is a child book is chilling and literally stole the heart!

Masami last book was: Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding:
Bridget is a thirty year old writer, obsesses about her love life, with her weight, with her over-indulgence in alcohol and cigarettes. Bridget’s friends and family are the supporting characters in her diary; they give her advice about her relationships, and support when problems arise. Her friends are essentially her surrogate family in London. Her mother is an overconfident, doting woman who is constantly trying to marry Bridget off to a rich, handsome man; and her father is considerably more down-to-earth, though he is sometimes driven into uncharacteristically unstable states of mind by his wife….
Masami really loves the character and she things Bridget is very funny!

My last boos was the novel The name of the Rose by Umberto Eco:
It is a historical murder mystery set in an Italian monastery. This mystery is combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory. Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and Adso of Melk, arrive at a Benedictine monastery in Northern Italy to attend a theological disputation. Upon their coming, the monastery is disturbed by a suicide. As the story unfolds, several other monks die under mysterious circumstances. William is tasked by the monastery’s abbot to investigate the deaths, and fresh clues with each murder victim lead William to dead ends and new clues…..
I read this book when I was in the high school and now I’m reading it again in English because I really like this mix of mystery/thriller and religion.
